My good friend Dimiter Georgiev is always keen to send me whatever picture he takes of Caspian Gull, my favourite among gulls. He went to Hungary last March with SAKERTOUR (http://www.sakertour.com/), a Hungarian tour company, and was able to take these photos close to Danube river, in one of the hides they manage, ideal places to see raptors and gulls.
Dimiter is a member of NEOPHRON TOURS, the tourist company and commercial arm of the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB)/ BirdLife Bulgaria. Neophron organizes a variety of natural history and wildlife tours and holidays in Bulgaria.
LARUS CACHINNANS - CASPIAN GULL
- All pictures by Dimiter Georgiev -
Adult Caspians are powerful and stunning birds. Birds form the "pontic race" (western population) may have a yellow tinge on legs.
Leg color of the upper bird are typical for adult Caspians.
Look at the wing pattern. Black extension in primary tips is limited. Note the pattern of P9.
Black eye, red eye-ring. Caspian make-up!
3cy bird.
2cy showing the typical features. What a beautiful bird...
A beautiful 4cy above.
Note the underwing pattern of the 2cy bird on the right.
Caspian is one of the most agressive gulls!
3cy cachinnans. Slender, long and parallel bill. Small head, dark eye, bulky structure.
Thank you Mitko!
